Demolition

The demolition phase of the viaduct, which is currently under way, is the most complex phase of the project as it involves the deconstruction of the deck elements and piers while preserving the existing ones.

Two worksites were set up: one directly on the deck and one in the area below the viaduct.

While the site was being set up, four tower cranes were erected, one at each pier, which were needed for both the demolition operations and the viaduct reconstruction activities.

The first step was the removal of the outer spans, i.e. on the Parma and La Spezia sides, by means of mobile cranes, after mechanical demolition of the slab.

Subsequently, the unloading and consequent removal of the supports at the three central spans of the viaduct was carried out in order to be able to proceed with the demolition of the decks, which is carried out using an excavator positioned on the deck and equipped with a grapple or demolition hammer. The demolition of the spans must be carried out by segment, proceeding backwards segment by segment starting from the joint in the middle and proceeding towards the piers in a symmetrical and synchronous manner on all piers to minimise the imbalance of forces and moments on the piers and arches.

Once this phase is complete, the demolition of the steel arches can begin: this is a complex operation as it is necessary to first separate the arch from the reinforced concrete pier in order to disconnect the two structures, and then remove the arches safely.

Once the demolition of the arches has been completed, the last segments of the deck are removed, followed by the partial demolition of the pier heads.
